Europe 2004

I travelled with my fiancée to Europe in March and April 2004. The diary is linked to below, and there's also a timeline of the entire trip. Plus, there are plenty of photos in the gallery.

This is a quick summary of what we got up to.

  • UK Britain
    Mar 25: Arrived at London Heathrow very early in the morning and took a bus to Oxford. Did a hop-on/hop-off tour and climbed Carfax Tower for a view of the city.
    Mar 26: Walked around Oxford. Saw the Bodleian Library, Bridge of Sighs, Magdalen College.
    Mar 27: Spent all day travelling to York by bus.
    Mar 28: St Mary's Abbey, York Minster, The Shambles, Jorvik Viking Centre, ghost tour.
    Mar 29: National Railway Museum, walked around a bit. Travelled by train to Edinburgh, looked at Edinburgh Castle, Tron Kirk and souvenir shops. Mar 30: Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, Palce of Holyroodhouse, Scotch Whiskey Heritage Centre.
    Mar 31: Flew to Dublin.
  • Ireland Ireland
    Mar 31: Travelled to Kilkenny by bus, walked to the castle and around the main streets.
    Apr 1: Kilkenny Castle, walking tour, court house, Kyteler's Pub, Rothe House, St Canice's Cathedral.
    Apr 2: Travelled back to Dublin by bus. Trinity College, Book of Kells, hop-on/hop-off tour, Jameson's Old Distillery.
    Apr 3: Hop-on/hop-off tour, Guinness Storehouse, Kilmainham Gaol, Literary Pub Crawl.
    Apr 4: Flew to London Heathrow.
  • UK Britain
    Apr 4: Travelled from Heathrow to Bath by bus. Hop-on/hop-off tour, walked around, saw bath Abbey, Pulteney Bridge. Roman Baths, comedy walking tour.
    Apr 5: The Circus, Museum of Costume, Royal Crescent, scenic tour, Bath Abbey. Travelled by train to London.
    Apr 6: Big Bus tour, Trafalgar Square, horse guards, Big Ben, river cruise, Oxford Street, Hamley's toy store.
    Apr 7: Monument, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, went to the theatre and saw the musical Thoroughly Modern Milly.
    Apr 8: Camden Markets, Buckingham Palace, Changing of the Guard, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, British Library.
    Apr 9: Flew from Heathrow to Madrid.
  • Spain Spain
    Apr 9: Checked in to hotel in Madrid, walked around a bit.
    Apr 10: Prado Museum, Palacio Real, weird parade.
    Apr 11: Biggest markets in the world, booked train to Barcelona, Gran Via.
    Apr 12: Horrible train journey to Barcelona via Zaragoza.
    Apr 13: Booked train to Nîmes, La Ramblas, food markets, pet stores with chameleons, iguanas, and turtles. Barcelona Cathedral, Segrada Familia, Parc Güell.
    Apr 14: Montjüic, Picasso Museum, bought lunch at the markets, Mercat Boqueria. Flamenco show in the evening.
    Apr 15: Train from Barcelona to Nîmes.
  • France France
    Apr 15: Arrived in Nîmes and found hotel. Walked around a bit.
    Apr 16: Nîmes Arena, Maison Carrée, Jardins de la Fontaine. Climbed the Tour Magne. Internet cafe for a while, then took a bus out to Pont du Gard, a huge bridge in the Roman aquaduct that carried water to Nîmes.
    Apr 17: Train to Paris. Climbed the Arc de Triomphe, walked down the Champs Elysée. Went into Notre Dame Cathedral, then climbed it. Dinner in the Latin quarter.
    Apr 18: Museum of Music, Hospital Museum, Notre Dame archeological thing, catacombs, Rodin Museum.
    Apr 19: The Sacre Cœur, the Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre.
    Apr 20: Flew from Paris to Milan.
  • Italy Italy
    Apr 20: Arrived in Milan and took the very poorly run bus service into the city. Checked into hotel, walked to the city centre, and saw the amazing Duomo. Walked to the castle, then relaxed in the nearby park.
    Apr 21: Took the train from Milan to Venice. Checked into our hotel, then went into the centre of Venice. Looked in lots of glass shops, saw the Rialto Bridge, Bridge of Sighs, and San Marco.
    Apr 22: Walked around for a while and got lost. Took vaporetto to Murano, watched glass blowing demonstration. Wandered around looking in shops.
    Apr 23: Train to Florence. Walked around, climbed the Duomo, saw David at the Accademia, and walked over the Ponte Vecchio.
    Apr 24: Palazzo Pitti, Uffizi Gallery, Santa Croce.
    Apr 25: Train to Rome. Went to the Colosseum, walked to the Spanish Steps.
    Apr 26: Palatine Hill area of Roman Forum, then an excellent free walking tour. Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, St Peter's.
    Apr 27: Vatican Museum, the mouth of truth.
    Apr 28: Took the train to the airport for the long flight home.
  • Hong Kong Hong Kong
    Apr 29: Arrived in Hong Kong after very little sleep on the plane. Walked around for a while, not much open. Took the Star Ferry to Kowloon, then walked to the Ladies Market. Went on a tour around the island - Man Mo Temple, Victoria Peak, Aberdeen, jewelry factory, Stanley Markets. Went to the airport for the flight home to Perth.
